Just off the living room sits a wonderful, intimate little study that was designed as a purposeful departure from its big, open neighbor. "It's very important to have that room you can retreat to in the early morning or evening," says Terry. A deep green paint color covers the walls and built-in bookcases, elevating the room's coziness. To counterbalance the depth of the wall color, Phoebe used lighter colors for the curtains, upholstery, and rug.
Barbara Mandrell’s daughter, Jaime Dudney, and sister, Louise Mandrell, dedicated the Family Rose Garden yesterday at the Southern Living Idea House garden. The gardens are an important design element that complements the beautiful interiors, as Southern Living magazine has always been known for its coverage of exquisite gardens and landscaping. Phoebe called on husband-and-wife fabric designers Peter Fasano and Elizabeth Hamilton to help her give the two bunkies their own personalities. "I used Elizabeth's designs to make her bunkie more feminine with a pretty blue-and-white palette, paisley wallpaper, and tufted headboards."
The Guesthouse Upstairs Suite
You can see those beautiful shades that pull up and down for sun control. It’s a gorgeous house, but we were only allowed to take photos of a few areas, but had full reign outside, so you’ll see lots of pics of the outside. For those who didn’t know, the Southern Living Idea House is located on the property of Fontanel, former home of country music legend, Barbara Mandrell. After months of hard work and inspired design, the NashvilleSouthern Living Idea House is officially open to the public!

We got there a little early and had a chance to take outside pics before everyone arrived, which came in handy. From the outside of the house, it’s set up in a U-shape around a courtyard, with lots of beautiful plantings. After the Ideahouse is closed at the end of this year, this will become a bed and breakfast, which I think is so neat. In the second-floor suite, Phoebe gave the small space big impact by covering everything in the same fabric (Medium Ticking in Warm Gray; laurakiran.com). "I took a farmhouse classic, the ticking stripe, and gave it a little kick by using it on the walls, curtains, upholstery, and even the lampshades," says Phoebe. Everything has a band of red trim to tie it back to the stunning oxblood red ceiling, while all-white bedding by the Company Store provides a break in the pattern.
Nashville Idea House Tour
Bathing the kitchen in color creates a cozy, friendly feel. "The one thing I had to have was white knobs," says Phoebe. Cable railings wrap the porches off of every room to allow for clear lines of vision to the stunning gardens below. Windows with 4 over 4 divided lights are often seen on historic farmhouses, so the team carried them throughout each structure for a consistent look. Every year, Southern Living selects a project team to develop one “Idea House” that inspires consumers to experiment in their homes and gardens. We put together an all-star team to design the ultimate Nashville house. Mimicking an old farmhouse, the main house revolves around one large living room flanked by a hardworking kitchen on one end that boasts a laundry room with enviable laundry room shelving. The exterior boasts a wraparound front porch with extra-deep porch swings and completely a separate rear-dining porch that is connected to the living room and dining room. Outside the main house, Historical Concepts designed several guest houses and bunkies each with their own kitchenette and porch so that company could have their own privacy.
Peek Inside This 1,200-Square-Foot Nashville Bungalow
Built by Nashville-basedCastle Homes, the main house boasts a large barn-like living room. Rustic ceiling beams, sliding barn doors, and dark wood floors and entry doors are softened with lots of patterned fabrics and upholstery, happy greens and blues, and white-washed wood slat walls. Unfortunately, we weren’t allowed to photograph the main house before the interiors are showcased in the August edition of Southern Living magazine. In the back, a porch is nestled between the dining room and primary bedroom.
I sauntered over and said hi, Jaime, I have to tell you one thing, “we have great taste in clothes.”. She laughed and was super friendly and I decided that we had to take a pic together, just to prove it. I also had to tell her that I just love her mama, cause I do. I have always admired and respected Barbara Mandrell so much. A big crowd gathered and it was a beautiful evening for an outdoor party.
Each of the six bedrooms of the five-building Idea House project has its own distinct style. In the master, retreat is a reproduction spool bed from Howard’s line of furniture, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Collection by Sherrill Furniture. The soft, welcoming retreat features Olympus White walls and Ice Cube color on the ceiling. An all-Sherwin Williams home, the color choices throughout are detailed in the Resource Guide available in the garage where you’ll also find current copies of Nashville House & Home & Garden magazine.

It’s farmhouse in feel, with a huge wrap around porch that connects all the buildings. The new Southern Living ideahouse has just opened to the public and will be open the rest of the year, so if you get a chance, you must go and tour it. A portion of the proceeds go to the St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital, which is a great cause.

The subtle color palette of the porch furniture blends with the rustic views surrouding the house. Again, because Southern Living will be covering the house in the August issue this year, we couldn’t take pics of all rooms, but did get to do a preview of the dining room and guesthouse. This is the well-lit dining room, simple and spacious.
